Compounded Medication – Prescription Only
This product is a compounded injectable formulation containing phenylephrine hydrochloride supplied in a sterile injectable vial and dispensed only pursuant to a valid prescription issued by a licensed healthcare provider. Phenylephrine hydrochloride is a synthetic alpha-adrenergic agonist. In compounding practice, injectable phenylephrine formulations may be prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider for emergency or rescue use in situations where prompt pharmacologic intervention is clinically indicated, including the management of prolonged erection or priapism under medical supervision. This product is not available for self-selection and may only be dispensed following provider authorization.
Compounded medications are not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA does not evaluate compounded formulations for safety, effectiveness, or quality. Compounding is performed by a state-licensed pharmacy pursuant to a patient-specific prescription. This page provides general, non-therapeutic information for educational and compliance purposes only. It does not provide treatment instructions, dosing guidance, or medical advice.
General Scientific Information (Non-Therapeutic)
Phenylephrine hydrochloride is referenced in scientific literature for its molecular structure and classification as a selective alpha-1 adrenergic receptor agonist. Laboratory and clinical research has examined its pharmacologic effects on vascular smooth muscle tone and adrenergic signaling pathways. Descriptions of molecular or receptor-binding characteristics are provided solely for general scientific context. No claims are made regarding safety, effectiveness, or clinical outcomes.
Contraindications
Phenylephrine HCl injection should not be used in individuals who have a known hypersensitivity or allergy to phenylephrine or any component of the compounded formulation; have severe or uncontrolled hypertension; have significant cardiac arrhythmias, ventricular tachycardia, or advanced cardiovascular disease; have hypersensitivity to sympathomimetic agents; or have other conditions in which alpha-adrenergic agonist therapy is contraindicated as determined by the prescribing healthcare provider. Use in pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should occur only if a licensed healthcare provider determines that potential risks and benefits have been carefully evaluated.
Warnings and Precautions
Phenylephrine is a potent vasoconstrictor and sympathomimetic agent. This formulation may be prescribed for use as a rescue therapy in the management of prolonged erection or priapism and should be administered only by, or under the direct supervision of, a licensed healthcare provider. Improper dosing or administration may result in severe hypertension, reflex bradycardia, arrhythmias, or other serious cardiovascular events.
Caution is advised in individuals with cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, hypertension, or those receiving medications that affect adrenergic signaling or blood pressure. Injectable administration must follow provider-directed protocols. Patients should be instructed to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms worsen or if adverse cardiovascular symptoms occur.
Potential Side Effects
Reported side effects associated with injectable phenylephrine formulations may include injection site reactions such as pain, redness, swelling, or irritation; headache; anxiety; tremor; palpitations; elevated blood pressure; reflex bradycardia; or chest discomfort. Serious adverse reactions may include hypertensive crisis, cardiac arrhythmias, myocardial ischemia, or cerebrovascular events. Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they experience chest pain, severe headache, vision changes, significant blood pressure elevation, or signs of a severe allergic reaction.
