Compounded Medication – Prescription Only
This product is a compounded oral capsule formulation containing methylene blue and dispensed only pursuant to a valid prescription issued by a licensed healthcare provider. Methylene blue is a synthetic chemical compound with a long history of scientific study. In compounding practice, oral methylene blue formulations may be prescribed when a provider determines that individualized dosing, formulation, or excipient selection is clinically appropriate for a specific patient. This product is not available for self-selection and may only be dispensed following provider authorization. Compounded medications are not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA does not evaluate compounded formulations for safety, effectiveness, or quality. Compounding is performed by a state-licensed pharmacy pursuant to a patient-specific prescription. This page provides general, non-therapeutic information for educational and compliance purposes only. It does not describe intended use, therapeutic benefit, neurologic effects, antimicrobial activity, or expected clinical outcomes.
General Scientific Information (Non-Therapeutic)
Methylene blue is referenced in scientific literature for its molecular structure and redox properties studied in laboratory and research environments. Descriptions of chemical characteristics or biochemical interactions are provided solely for general scientific context. No claims are made regarding safety, effectiveness, mitochondrial activity, cognitive effects, antimicrobial properties, or suitability for any particular condition.
Contraindications
Methylene blue capsules should not be used in individuals who have a known hypersensitivity or allergy to methylene blue or any component of the compounded formulation; have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency; are receiving serotonergic medications where use is contraindicated due to risk of serotonin toxicity as determined by the prescribing healthcare provider; or are unable to tolerate oral capsule formulations. Use in pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should occur only if a licensed healthcare provider determines that potential risks and benefits have been carefully evaluated.
Warnings and Precautions
Methylene blue may interact with serotonergic medications and other agents affecting monoamine pathways. Caution is advised in individuals taking antidepressants, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, or other medications that may interact with methylene blue. Patients should inform their healthcare provider of all medical conditions, medications, and supplements prior to use. Urine or stool discoloration may occur. Take only as prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider.
Potential Side Effects
Reported side effects associated with oral methylene blue formulations may include gastrointestinal discomfort, nausea, headache, dizziness, anxiety, restlessness, or discoloration of urine or stool. Serious adverse reactions are uncommon but may occur. Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they experience signs of a severe allergic reaction, neurologic symptoms, or symptoms suggestive of serotonin toxicity.
